About our lab

The Urban Ergonomics Lab at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University has long been dedicated to the development of digital immersive environments and ergonomics measurement technologies. By integrating immersive environments across various media with contemporary ergonomics measurement techniques, the Lab investigates human perception and cognition of urban and architectural spaces through the analysis of sensory responses, neural activities, bodily movements, and spatiotemporal behaviors. Its research enables the analysis and prediction of spatial experiences within digital twins, providing evidence-based insights to support precise design interventions in the built environment.

The Lab has led and undertaken numerous major research projects, including Technologies for the Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of New Artificial Profile Sports Venues under the "Science and Technology Winter Olympics" Key Special Program of the National Key R&D Program during China's 13th Five-Year Plan; Key Technologies and Products for Ergonomic Engineering in Public Buildings under the "Sustainable Urban Development" Key Special Program during the 14th Five-Year Plan; as well as projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Cyrus Tang Foundation, and the Tsinghua–Toyota Joint Research Fund.

The Lab has also developed extensive practical applications in urban regeneration, architectural heritage conservation, and spatial design. Representative projects include the digital reconstruction of Xichun Garden (the historical predecessor of Tsinghua Garden), the digital restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Eastern Qing Tombs, and the digital reconstruction of Chengqian Palace in the Forbidden City. Other notable projects include the Shougang Big Air venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Three Hills and Five Gardens Art Center in Beijing, the adaptive reuse of the Liwan Power Plant in Guangzhou, the Tsinghua University Integrated Service Center for Faculty and Students (renovation of the rear hall of the University's Main Building), and the renovation and upgrading of the new campus of the Open University of China.

The Lab's research projects have been repeatedly invited to major international and domestic exhibitions, including the Venice Architecture Biennale (the 2022 China Pavilion Homecoming Exhibition, the 2023 China Pavilion, and the 2025 Main Exhibition), as well as the main exhibition of the 2025 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season. These achievements demonstrate the Lab's broad influence and recognition across academia, professional practice, and the wider public. □
