Abstract

This is the first textbook in China devoted to Urban Ergonomics. It provides a systematic introduction to the field's theoretical approaches and technical tools, as well as guidance on applying them in design practice.

The book was written in response to the human-centered new urbanization strategy set out in China's 14th Five-Year Plan and to the new issues and challenges facing architecture as the discipline undergoes transformation. Urban Ergonomics studies the livability of built environments. It turns design questions traditionally addressed through experience and judgment into subjects that can be iteratively refined through scientific evaluation. Its aim is to strengthen the ability of design to serve people, improve the quality of living spaces, and increase people’s satisfaction with their living environments.

The book is intended primarily as a textbook for the course Urban Ergonomics Methdologies. It can also serve as a design guide for professionals in related fields. Its principal readers include undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, teachers, and practitioners in architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, industrial engineering, and related disciplines.
